a) Piece of "Atlantic Telegraph Cable As Guaranteed By Tiffany & Co., Broadway, New York"; section of steel cables around copper cables at center; ends capped in brass bands; band at center has above text in raised lettering; b) corresponding photocopy of letter of authenticity, verifiying piece of cable is authentic; dated August 21, 1858, and signed by Cyrus W. Field; tan small rectangular piece of paper with black printing, mounted to off-white rectangular cardstock; back side is blank; see Notes for full text of letter. From the exhibit "The Story of Littleton in 125 Objects": This is an authenticated piece of the first Atlantic Telegraph Cable. Tiffany & Co. bought a section of the unused cable and sold it as souvenirs. |
