Description |
Fire hose cart; red painted wood with 2 large wooden spoke wheels; spool at center to wind hose around; T-shaped tongue to pull by hand; see related item: XX-58a-b (fire hose nozzle); see Notes for more information. From the exhibit "The Story of Littleton in 125 Objects": The J.G. Lilley Hook and Ladder Company organized in July 1890 as a volunteer fire company with men from the community serving as firemen. In September 1890, the town board decided to "order a hook and ladder outfit...as soon as arrangements can be made." In January 1891, funds were appropriated, and, in December 1891, a committee appointed by the mayor of Littleton traveled to Denver to purchase "a cart, hose, and fittings for the fire boys." The committee spent a little over $400 for a hose cart, 500 feet of 2 1/2 inch hose, nozzles, and other miscellaneous items. |
