Description |
"United Colonies Continental Currency Five Dollars"; off-white rectangular paper with brown ornate printing; printed below is "This Bill entitles the Bearer to receive Five Spanish Milled Dollars, or the Value therof in Gold or Silver, according to a Resolution of Congress, passed at Philadelphia, February 17, 1776."; ornate text border on all 4 sides of front, with round image to left of thorny bush and hand and Latin saying (see Notes); ink serial number illegible, as are notations on front; several attached blue-black threads to lower left of center; reverse side has brown printing and image of two oval leave at center; ornate border; "Five Dollars" and maker's information below. From the exhibit "The Story of Littleton in 125 Objects": Issued by the Continental Congress during the American Revolution, paper money like this helped to fund the war effort. By the end of the war, the currency had depreciated significantly, becoming almost worthless. |
