Description |
Newsletter; white with black text, orange; rectangular; coated paper; "Today, Martin Marietta" newsletter; volume: Number Three 1976; title: "Viking: Intellect and Ingenuity Triumphant"; photograph of orange terrain on cover; caption of cover photo (on interior cover): "Viking 1 sent back the first color picture from the surface of Mars at about noon, local time, on July 21, the day after the landing on the planet. The view is southeast from the spacecraft. Orange-red materials cover most of the surface, apparently forming a thin layer over darker bedrock exposed in some patches. Scientists said the reddish material might be limonite, or hydrated ferric oxide, which forms on Earth in the presence of water and an oxidizing atmosphere. The color of the sky, described as "pink to a kind of creamy orange" is probably due to scattering an reflection of light from reddish sediment suspended in the Martian sky."; interior of newsletter contains articles concerning Project Viking; back cover has two black and white photographs with text: "Viking Lands on Mars," "Viking 1 transmitted the historic first photograph from the surface of Mars (top) within minutes of successfully landing on July 20. It shows an area of both rocks and finely granulated material - sand or dust. The large rock in the center is 4 inches across and shows three rough facets. To its lower right is a rock possibly moved during the spacecraft's descent maneuvers, revealing the finer-grained substratum..."; 25 pages; 1976. |
