Treadle sewing machine in wood-topped cabinet with machine cover and small storage drawer; cabinet has wrought iron legs and treadle; "Elias Howe, Jr., New York, Inventor and Maker, U.S.A., 50592 Patented Sept. 10, 1846, August 24, 1858". From the exhibit "The Story of Littleton in 125 Objects": This Howe treadle sewing machine belonged to the Comstock family, and likely came west with the family around 1879. George Comstock went to California first, before marrying his wife Sarah in Iowa. The family settled in Littleton in 1883. |
